Navy unleashes high-tech Sea Hunter

The Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency’s Sea Hunter program is a Navy platform designed to stalk foreign submarines. What makes this unique is Sea Hunter will cover thousands of miles over open seas, for months at a time, without a single crewmember. Prototype testing completed, it has been referred to the Office of Naval Research. Deputy Defense Secretary Robert Work has stated “I would like to see unmanned flotillas operating in the Western Pacific and Persian Gulf within five years.” This program helps address manpower shortages in the military, eliminates potential casualties, and costs far less to run than manned vessels. And if the Sea Hunter is captured, it can be destroyed or wiped clean of data, reducing the security risk.
