This September, a group of 24 military Veterans and their travel companions embarked on a trip to Normandy, France, with Road Scholar, a nonprofit that hosts educational travel for older adults. The nine-day program took participants from Paris to the beaches of Normandy to learn about military history where it happened. On the most impactful day, the group visited Omaha Beach to walk in the footsteps of WWII soldiers. At the Normandy American Cemetery, they took part in a moving ceremony to pay respects to those who made the ultimate sacrifice on D-Day. And later, participants visited a virtually unknown American Memorial at a local farm. Participants described the program as “beautifully and sensitively planned,” “emotional and informative,” and “moving.” Another said that laying flowers at the cemetery and hearing the National Anthem and Taps “will forever be etched on my heart.”
