Honoring those who served in Vietnam

On March 29, the nation paused to commemorate Vietnam Veterans Day. William Kane, president of the Board of Directors of the National Vietnam War Museum, issued the following statement to mark the occasion:

“Today we honor all Vietnam Veterans who served in our Armed Forces during the Vietnam War.

“Vietnam Veterans Day was signed into law five years ago to recognize all who served in the military during the Vietnam War. It’s meant to be observed every year on this date.

“Why March 29th?

“It was on this day 49 years ago that the United States Military Assistance Command, Vietnam was disestablished. It was also the day that the last U.S. combat troops departed Vietnam and when the last of our POWs were released by Hanoi.

“In honor of all our veterans who served during the Vietnam War, as well as the more than 58,300 men and women whose names appear on the wall at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C. and on our replica wall at the museum, I’d like to share this brief tribute video with you. As you watch it, I hope you’ll reflect on all that our Vietnam Veterans have done for our country and will join me in expressing gratitude for their service.”
